Introduce a Container

We will introduce a single container much like we introduced the tin, tube, or jar that directly holds source.

  1. With the dog lightly restrained or in a wait, place the container 0.5-1 m out of reach.
  2. Release with your new search cue, such as "find", "seek", or "search". The method is the same as in the food games, but choose a clearly distinct word.
  3. Mark and feed the instant your dog's nose reaches the container, delivering the food directly onto the container lid. It doesn't have to be a touch. When in doubt, reward early. We are no longer working on duration at this stage!
  4. Feed several treats in quick succession so that your dog does not have a chance to pull her nose up.
  5. Pick up the container immediately after feeding the last treat on it, and reset. This way, you pull the source away from the dog, not the dog away from the source.
  6. Only once your dog is very confident with this game (which could take anywhere from 2 reps to 2 days), rebuild duration the same way you did on the tin.
